Buffalo Chicken Poppers: Home Sweet Home

I know I just did a Lazy Happy Hour Adventure two weeks ago, but I found something at Trader Joe’s that was irresistible and had to give them a try. I’m not sure about all of you but sometimes you walk through Trader Joe’s and you end up coming out with a lot more items than you intended. That is exactly what happened to me on my most recent trip.

When I first came across these they reminded me of the Chicken Tikka Masala Samosas that I had a while back ago. Any of you that know me are aware that I can’t pass up on anything spicy so these Buffalo Style Chicken Poppers fit the bill!

Makings of an Old Fashioned

For all of the Old Fashioned connoisseurs out there I’m sure you are very familiar with the three ingredients above. I know I’ve had Old Fashioneds in my Adventures before from Boscat Kitchen and even a unique Maple Bacon Old Fashion from Great Maple but this is the first time I made it at home. Although I did make a Rum Old Fashioned which was quite delicious however it’s time to go back to the original. All it takes to make this drink is by dashing a sugar cube with those bitters and muddling the cube. Pour in that whiskey and get to stirring!

Old Fashioned

  • 2 oz Whiskey
  • 1 sugar cube
  • 3 dashes of Angostura bitters
Marker’s Mark Old Fashioned

I have had plenty of Lunch and Learns at work that I have been able to use for my many Delivery Happy Hour Adventures meals. However, I have a first which is a Mix and Learn! We were sent a bottle of Maker’s Mark, a bottle of Angostura bitters, and two sugar cubes. I figured since this was all about Maker’s Mark now would be a great opportunity to show off some of my Maker’s Mark gear. Thanks to my mom when she attended a whiskey tasting event, she got some extra glasses and coasters. I love the coasters because they mimic the dripping red wax that makes a bottle of Maker’s Mark so iconic. This Old Fashioned may have been stronger than others in the past but overall still a great drink. I think Old Fashioneds have started to grow on me because they have the sugar to help offset the strength of the whiskey.

Buffalo Chicken Poppers

With the help of my trusty air fryer, I was able to get these poppers to the perfect golden brown color all fried or pastries should have. As you can see I was mimicking the picture on the box by throwing in some red pepper flakes into the ranch to spice things up a bit.

The Buffalo Chicken Poppers are wrapped in filo dough which is the same type of dough that is used in spanokopita. Just like spanokopita, the outside was quite crispy and with each bite, you have bits of the exterior crumble onto your plate. It is absolutely flaky and buttery which does make these much more delectable. One must be careful when eating these triangle-shaped poppers because you may get a burst of hot lava-like substance pouring into your mouth. I’m not talking about spice but just the heat of the inside of each of these.

An Inside Look

I just had to tear these open to get a glance of what is hiding inside. Not sure if it’s just me but it totally looks like it’s filled with egg salad which I am not a fan of. If you too are not a fan of egg salad then I suggest not tearing it open. Trust me though because the inside tastes nothing like egg salad. You get a slight heat from that iconic buffalo flavor and then you have the cream cheese helps to cool things down. For those of you that are really sensitive to heat, a side of ranch can really bring down the heat. I only had five of these but to be honest I probably could have downed the entire box of 10.

I know this is a much shorter Adventure but I have some excellent news to share! As I write this I am just a few days away from 2 weeks after getting my second vaccine shot! That means I will be fully vaccinated and will be on my way to do Happy Hours at restaurants once again. For the time being, I will probably stick with outdoor Happy Hours. Which to be honest why wouldn’t you want to enjoy the outside when you are living in beautiful Southern California. Thank you again to all of you that have kept following me on my Adventures.

  1. First thing I did was grab a beer (or two, or three) at the local breweries! It was quite literally a breath of fresh air! I made sure they had some good snacking foods too. First place had a taco truck and the second had garlic fries.
