Spicy California Roll

Great Delivery Offer: Ky Sushi

I was so used to having so many Happy Hour Adventures already completed in advance that I finally caught up on using them all. So when Saturday came around I needed to find a place quick. After scrolling through Door Dash again I found one of the best deals ever on DoorDash.

DoorDash Offer

Typically most of the deals I see on DoorDash are 20% off up to $5 off with a minimum purchase of $15 or $20. When I found Ky Sushi and their amazing deal of 40% off up to $9 I just had to jump on it. I was looking at other offers and a lot of places have been increasing their minimum purchase which I was disappointed to see but I understand why they would want to increase the minimum.

Liquor and Champagne?

Time to rewind the clock to when I made a very unique champagne cocktail. You may remember the mimosa from my Breakfast Happy Hour and the bellini from the Brunch Happy Hour. I wanted to make something that even I’ve never had before. A drink that uses vodka along with champagne. I don’t know who comes up with these drinks but they must have wanted champagne to celebrate a special occasion but add the vodka to add a little kick to it.

Blue Champagne

  • 1 oz vodka
  • .25 oz lemon juice
  • .25 oz blue curacao
  • Dash of triple sec
  • 3 to 5 oz of champagne
Blue Champagne

Blue Champagne, not the most innovative name but it tells you exactly what you are getting. To make this drink you will pour all the ingredients, except for the champagne, into a champagne flute. Then you pour the champagne on top of the ingredients to top it off. It’s as simple as that. Surprisingly it all works together. You get the sweetness of the blue curacao and triple sec coming in while the lemon juice adds a little bit of tart citrus flavor. I’ll be honest the champagne was starting to go a little flat after it sitting around for a bit but it worked in my favor since I don’t care for bubbles too often.

Packaging

Alright! Now it’s time to eat! Of course with a place called Ky Sushi, I’m going to get all of the sushi. So one thing I did notice on part of the packaging was they listed their social media info but their Instagram handle didn’t match the one that I saw on Instagram which may confuse people.

UCI Roll

One of the harsh realities of delivery is the fact that you may not always get the food in the best of conditions. I typically try my best in salvaging it to make it picture-ready but unfortunately there was no way to save this roll. Luckily the other rolls held together. Ky Sushi is located near UCI so of course, one of their most popular rolls is named after UCI. This has to be one of the most unique sushi rolls I’ve ever had. It sounds like your typical roll on the outside with shrimp, salmon, avocado, and tobiko. Tobiko is those little orange spheres that you see scattered across the sushi roll, essentially fish eggs. It’s when you get on the inside of the roll that things get unique. You won’t find fish inside, instead, you will see tempura sweet potato and asparagus. The sweet potato adds sweetness to the roll and the asparagus has a crisp crunch in each bite.

Spicy California Roll

I won’t lie I’m a sucker for Americanized sushi rolls so I just had to go for the Spicy California Roll. As with your typical California roll, it is stuffed with imitation crab and cucumber. You can spot the black and white sesame seeds to add a little texture. What makes it spicy is just the addition of some sriracha which as you can see gives it a little bit of red coloring. I wish there was more to say about the sushi roll but it truly is as simple as that.

Escolar Nigiri

I typically just stick with sushi rolls, I don’t get sashimi or nigiri but I decided to step out of my comfort zone. I went for some nigiri sushi, for those of you that don’t know what nigiri is it is essentially a piece of fish on a mound of sushi rice and is meant to be picked up with your fingers. I didn’t want to go with a typical tuna or salmon so I picked a fish that I’ve never heard of, escolar. Escolar is a tropical fish and as you can see by the color the flesh is white. The fish is very fatty and with that comes a more rich taste. While doing some research on escolar as I write this post I found out that this fish is banned for consumption in Japan because of the potential side effects of stomach problems. Don’t worry I feel fine myself with no problems so it might just be if you eat too much of this fish.

Even with getting that $9 off I still ended up paying $33 for all the sushis but that also includes fees and the tip. I know the title does say Great Delivery Offer, which it is, but it only works if you don’t order a lot which with sushi you need a lot. I don’t have sushi too often and the reason for that is that it can get a little pricey so that is why I enjoy doing all-you-can-eat sushi places. You get a great value for the price and the amount of sushi you get.

  1. I really like this place called Oishi Sushi near my mom (there’s an unrelated restaurant by the same name by me that’s actually a Hibachi restaurant that’s also really good but not what I’m talking about). If I ever got to pick a sushi location it would probably be there. However, my best friends are OBSESSED with Sushi Ai. It’s a local chain that has an all you can eat special. The special is a much better price for lunch than it is for dinner, so I usually don’t do the all you can eat unless it’s lunch time. What’s frustrating though is that every location has different offers and limitations. My friends prefer the St. Charles location because it has the most appetizer options. My favorite is the Chesterfield Valley location because they serve bento boxes all day (I’m pretty sure). I love their bento boxes.

    1. That sounds like some great options! Lunchtime usually does offer the better deals! That is strange each location is different. You would think with it being a chain it would be consistent throughout. I would definitely go to the one with more options! It’s been a while since I’ve had a bento box. I think I need one in my life again.
